Minimalism in Relationships

"Minimalism in Relationships" is a Small-Infinities design concept focusing on degrees of complexity and simplicity in social relations. It encourages us to think of relationships as designer relationships, making us the designers and co-designers of our social worlds. It is a design practice applied both to our social worlds as a whole ("what I design for all my relations: that's about me"), and to each unique relationship ("what you and I design: that's about us").

One design tool we have is to simplify a relationship by letting go of an unwanted detail, such as a grudge. Can I drop a grudge? If I can, how will it simplify my relationship? Can I make a habit of grudge-dropping and apply it to my social habits in general? And what is gained by these simplifications?

One gain is that Minimalism in Relationships lends itself to fresh starts. Letting complexity drop away, the details of a history, accumulated grudges, festering arguments, past annoyances and perceived slights. Each of these are units of complexity, attached to the relationship, attached to our internal representations of the relationship. They hang around, take up space, draw attention, block lines of sight, stir up processes, create noise and constrict the paths along which relationships might otherwise evolve.

One of the achievements of minimalist design is that it allows us to bring out properties which we feel to be essential, want to give plenty of space and eloquence to. So, by letting go of these cluttering units of complexity, we create the opportunity to give space and eloquence to the properties we find most valuable: family bonds, friendship, courtesy, kindness; whatever we love, and love to love, about the relationship.

Minimalism in Relationships seeks to allow us to create designer spaces for simpler, more satisfying, more beautiful relationships, and to create designer spaces for the unfolding of relationships on the horizon; liberating more internal space to make way for more eloquent transformations of old relations and space for newly unfolding relations.

The minimalist design of relationships is a particular boon for small infinities like you and me, because we are aware that we have a near infinite number of ways to generate units of complexity in a relationship, and so does the other person; a near infinite number of ways to represent the relationship internally, and so does the other person. So, there is plenty of room for playing with design, for sweeping away, for removal, for rearrangement, for highlighting, for giving space and eloquence to some things while letting others drop away.

Next: How to simplify relationships? Can Minimalism in Relationships become habit? Can Minimalism in Relationships be a partnership, a co-creation between me and the others in the relationship? Can Minimalism in Relationships be a dynamic art piece, and installation art piece, lived out in the shared world, constructed by two related artists, two artists in relationship?
