Infinity Aware Design Principles

Infinity Aware Design focuses on finding and creating the spaces and environments in which infinite systems like you and me evolve, unfold and thrive.

Infinity Aware Design is an exploration, an expression, an unfolding, of what it means to be an infinite system, and often, of what it means to be a human infinite system. And what it means to be surrounded by, embedded in and comprised of dynamical systems, complex systems, simple systems … and other infinite systems.

Here are few principles that are immerging from this exploration. My plan is to elaborate and unfold what I discover about them in the Surfaces blog

• Always unique; never the same twice

• Gently unpredictable

• Always on

• Non-functional

• Auto-Interactive: generative in response to interaction; generative with no interaction

• Embedded Observers:

  • Design to include one or more active observers as interactive, dynamic, and complex parts of the system.

  • Design to allow the observer to explore their unique relationship to the rest of the system, leveraging their privileged position to generate new experiences, new creativity, and new expressive potential.

  • The observer is an Infinite System embedded within the Infinite System being designed (an Infinite System within an Infinite System).

  • The presence of Observers (active or passive) explodes mere complex systems into Infinite Systems.

  • The observer is both embedded in the design and stands out from the design.

• Ambient Simplicity -- Subjective Eloquence. Uses dynamic combinations of simple shapes, geometries, patterns, colors and motion to stimulate the physical, visual and experiential spaces, without over-determining the world of representation that arises in the subjective space of the viewer.

• Emergent Triangulation. When two or more formally unconnected things point to or suggest something in common that is not fully apparent.
