Infinity Aware Design
Exploring the Interplay of Simplicity and Complexity to design spaces: internal spaces, external spaces and the in-between spaces that connect them.
Internal Spaces: mental spaces, memory spaces, emotional spaces, learning spaces, thinking spaces.
External Spaces: living spaces, creative spaces, social spaces, private and shared spaces.
In-between Spaces: The spaces that connect the internal with the external. The spaces in which we express ourselves in the world.
Small Infinities Art Installations explore the creation of private and shared expression of Experience, Memory and Meaning.
Infinity Aware Design focuses on finding and creating the spaces and environments in which infinite systems evolve, unfold and thrive.
Small-Infinities experiments with technology and concepts toward the ultimate goal of producing live-in immersive installation art which allow observers to transition seamlessly between minimalist design and explosively rich interactive surfaces of personal experience, memory, aesthetics, learning and meaning … and then back to simple minimalist forms.
Infinity Aware Design explores the application of an evolving set of design principles.
What is a Small Infinities Art Installation? Here are some characteristics.
Never repeats - generates an infinite number of views, surfaces
No Interface! The art is the interface! The interest of the viewer is the interface. Nothing between the viewer and the art. Nothing to read. Nothing to understand. Nothing in the way!
Simple surfaces that open into infinitely complex spaces
Live-in minimalist environments
Portable and Distributed: facets can move about many of the surfaces that we interact with
Endless and Novel presentation: endlessly brings together, combines, dissolves, and recombines content into novel and never repeated combinations and contexts, both spontaneously and in response to viewers interaction, whim, attraction, attention, and interest.
Emergent: generates both emergent and scripted behaviors
Generative: Benefit from a blend of combinatorics, dynamic complex systems, stochastic injection, and visitor driven simplifications and expansions
Includes one or more rule-based systems, using relationships that arise from semantics, designer instructions, as well as relationships which arise spontaneously on their own or in response to the user during a performance (live coding)
Demonstrate concepts of The Mixology Cycle: Collecting, Mixing, Surfacing
Creates a sense of simple and abundant space
Evocative: emotionally, creatively, and intellectually stimulating
Ergonomic: Explores dynamic balancing of the physical, cognitive, emotional properties to allow the observer to fluidly create aesthetic, thought provoking, calming, energetic experiences and interactions, on their own terms.
Ephemerally Interactive: observer can influence how the installation unfolds by showing minimal and occasional interest, and by doing nothing at all.
Dynamically unfolds memory, meaning, emotion, knowledge, patterns
Digital-Digital Continuity: Design to create interplay between distributed digital surfaces (screens, monitors, projection, etc.)
Physical-Digital Continuity: Design to create and explore interplay between physical and digital spaces. Objects in the installation’s physical space arise as dynamic characters in digital space.
Inspired by spatial flow concepts in many Frank Lloyd Wright designs, where distinct spaces (such as indoor and outdoor, or living room and dining room) appear seamless due to shared and continuous floor patterns, materials, colors etc.
Example: a physical print in the installation space appears as a character in the digital animations.
The Simple Arts of Complexity
Small-Infinites starts with a ballistically expansive view of the role of art, creativity, expression.
Experience is art. Memory is art. Meaning is art.
The expression of experience, memory and meaning are moments of artistic expression.
The spaces in which these expressions occur are living art exhibits, living art installations, art spaces.
These spaces may arise anywhere we like. These spaces change constantly.
We can create any number of them.
We can visit them.
We can spend time in them.
We can live in them.
We can unfold into them.
We can open up in them, relax and luxuriate in them.
They are private; ours alone.
Sometimes we share versions of them, flavors of them.
Small Infinities explores the role of art in the lives of Small-Infinities, like me and you (and Small Infinites that are not like me and you).
